The 2004 Prius introduced a "Hot Engine Coolant Storage System" that stores hot engine coolant in a vacuum canister for preheating the engine on start-up. This system’s ‘preheating’ of the engine greatly reduces emissions when the vehicle is 1st started.

It is located within the front left fender can and store hot coolant at 176 degrees Fahrenheit for up to three days. When starting a cold engine, the system uses an auxiliary water pump to force the hot coolant into the engine and upon shutdown the system refills the coolant storage tank with hot engine coolant.
